8000-Metre Peaks
Pakistan is home to 5 of the world's 14 eight-thousanders
Last updated: · Reviewed by Javeed Iqbal, Founder
Pakistan holds five of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders, more than any country except Nepal, which makes it the leading destination for expedition mountaineering at the very highest altitudes. Four of the five 8000m peaks in Pakistan rise from the Karakoram: K2 at 8,611m is the world's second-highest mountain, followed by Gasherbrum I at 8,080m (the 11th highest), Broad Peak at 8,051m (12th) and Gasherbrum II at 8,035m (13th). The fifth, Nanga Parbat at 8,126m (9th highest), stands alone in the western Himalaya above the Indus. Between them these peaks draw serious climbers from every continent who come to climb in Pakistan on the highest of high-altitude stages.
K2 and the two Gasherbrums cluster around the Baltoro Glacier and are reached on foot from Skardu, while Broad Peak shares the same approach beside K2. Nanga Parbat, the famous "Killer Mountain", is reached separately by its Rupal or Diamir faces near Chilas. Every eight-thousander here needs a climbing permit from the government, royalty payments that vary by peak and team size, and a licensed liaison officer, all of which we arrange for your K2 expedition or any other 8000m climb.
A full expedition to any of these giants typically runs six to eight weeks from base camp to summit and back, built around careful acclimatisation rotations and a patient wait for a settled summit window. Our teams handle the whole chain, from permits and Baltoro approach logistics to base camp, high-altitude porters, cooks and oxygen where needed, leaving you free to concentrate on the mountain.
