K2 Base Camp trek in the Karakoram

K2 Treks

Trek to the base of the world's second-highest peak through the legendary Baltoro Glacier

Last updated: · Reviewed by Javeed Iqbal, Founder

The K2 base camp trek is the classic high-altitude journey through the central Karakoram, following the Baltoro glacier trek route from the roadhead at Askole up one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. After several days on the ice, the trail reaches Concordia at around 4,600 metres, the vast glacial junction known as the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, where four separate 8,000-metre peaks stand in view at once: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II. From there most groups continue to K2 Base Camp at roughly 5,150 metres, directly beneath the world's second-highest mountain.

These are serious high-altitude treks rather than casual walks, typically running 14 to 21 days from arrival to departure and demanding good fitness and careful acclimatisation. Longer variants add the Gondogoro La at 5,585 metres, a glaciated pass crossed with fixed ropes that opens an alternative return to the Hushe valley, or head into the remote Biafo-Hispar system past Snow Lake, one of the largest glacial basins on Earth. Every route needs licensed guides, registered porters and the correct permits, all of which we arrange.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the K2 Base Camp trek?

The K2 Base Camp trek is a long approach walk that follows the Baltoro glacier from Askole to Concordia and on to K2 Base Camp at around 5,150 metres, at the foot of the world's second-highest mountain. It is a non-technical trek, meaning no climbing skills are needed on the standard route, but it crosses rough glacial terrain at high altitude over roughly two weeks.

How long and how hard is the K2 trek?

Most K2 region treks run 14 to 21 days from Skardu and back, with roughly 8 to 12 of those days spent walking on and beside the glacier. The trekking is rated strenuous: you reach altitudes of about 5,150 metres at K2 Base Camp, cross uneven moraine carrying a daypack, and camp in remote places for days at a time. Good aerobic fitness and unhurried acclimatisation are essential.

What is Concordia?

Concordia is the huge glacial junction at around 4,600 metres where the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet. Nicknamed the Throne Room of the Mountain Gods, it is one of the few places on Earth where four 8,000-metre peaks, K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II, are all visible from a single point. It serves as the staging base for the final walk to K2 Base Camp.

When is the best season for the K2 trek?

The trekking season in the Karakoram runs from June to August, when the high passes are open and the weather is most settled. July and August are the most reliable months for clear views and stable conditions on the Baltoro, while late June and early September see fewer trekkers but a higher chance of unsettled weather and lingering snow on the passes.

What is the difference between the K2 Base Camp and Snow Lake treks?

The K2 Base Camp trek heads up the Baltoro glacier to Concordia and the foot of K2, focused on the great 8,000-metre peaks of the central Karakoram. The Snow Lake trek instead follows the Biafo and Hispar glaciers across Snow Lake and the Hispar La, one of the largest glacial basins outside the poles, a wilder and more committing crossing linking the Baltistan and Hunza regions. Both are multi-week high-altitude treks, but they explore different valleys.
