Motorcycle touring the Karakoram Highway

Motorcycle Touring

Conquer the world's most spectacular mountain roads on two wheels

Last updated:

A motorcycle tour in Pakistan is built around the Karakoram Highway (KKH), one of the highest paved roads on Earth, stretching roughly 1,300 km from Islamabad to the Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m on the Chinese border. To ride the KKH is to cross the junction of three great mountain ranges, the Karakoram, the Himalaya and the Hindu Kush, climbing from around 500 m in the Punjab plains to the thin air of the Karakoram at Khunjerab. Along the way riders pass thundering gorges, glacier-fed rivers and terraced apricot orchards clinging to near-vertical valley walls. The best season for a Karakoram Highway motorcycle trip runs from May through October, once snow has cleared from the high passes but before autumn storms close the road.

Adventure and dual-sport motorbikes in the 400-800 cc range, with strong low-end torque, handle the mix of smooth asphalt, chip-seal and occasional gravel best on a motorbike tour in Pakistan. Fuel stations are spaced every 80 to 120 km in the main valleys, so carrying a small reserve is prudent beyond Gilgit. Road conditions vary: sections rebuilt after the 2010 Attabad landslide are excellent, while some stretches near Chilas and Raikot remain rougher. A support vehicle carrying luggage and spare parts turns a tough expedition into a comfortable journey, letting riders focus on the scenery rather than mechanical worries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is motorcycle touring in Pakistan safe?

Yes, the northern mountain regions along the Karakoram Highway are among the most welcoming and stable parts of the country, and thousands of foreign riders tour them every season. The main risks are the roads themselves, high altitude, sharp drops and the odd rough section, rather than security. We ride with an experienced lead and sweep rider, a support vehicle and a first-aid kit, and we plan daily distances so no one is riding tired in the dark.

What motorcycle is best for the Karakoram Highway?

An adventure or dual-sport bike in the 400-800 cc range is ideal, with enough low-end torque for steep climbs and thin air, yet light enough to handle gravel and rough patches. Popular choices include the Honda CB500X, mid-size KTM and BMW GS models and similar. Very large touring bikes feel heavy on the rougher stretches near Chilas and Raikot, while small commuter bikes struggle with luggage at altitude.

When is the best season to ride in Pakistan?

May through October is the reliable window, when the high passes are clear of snow and the roads are open. The Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m usually opens around April or May and can close with early snow in November. High summer, June to August, gives the warmest, longest riding days, while September and October bring cooler air, golden foliage and the clearest mountain views.

Can I rent a motorcycle in Pakistan or should I bring my own?

Most riders on our tours use a well-maintained rental bike we provide, which avoids the cost and paperwork of shipping your own machine across borders. If you prefer to bring your own motorcycle, it is possible using a Carnet de Passage and the correct import formalities, which we can advise on. Renting locally is the simpler option for most international visitors and keeps you on a bike already suited to the terrain.

Do you provide a support vehicle and guide?

Yes. Every guided tour includes a 4x4 support vehicle that carries luggage, spare parts and extra fuel and provides roadside assistance throughout. You ride with an experienced lead rider who knows the route and a sweep rider at the back, so no one is ever left behind. This lets you focus on the riding while the team handles logistics, fuel stops and any mechanical issues.

Do I need a permit or special documents to ride in northern Pakistan?

You need a valid passport with a Pakistan tourist visa, and to ride you should carry a valid motorcycle licence from your home country plus an International Driving Permit. Most of the main Karakoram Highway route to Hunza and the Khunjerab Pass needs no special permit, though your passport is registered at security checkpoints along the way. Some border and restricted zones require extra clearance, which we arrange in advance as part of the tour.
