6000-Metre Peaks
The ideal stepping stone between trekking and high-altitude mountaineering
Last updated: · Reviewed by Javeed Iqbal, Founder
Pakistan's 6000m peaks are the classic starting point for anyone stepping up from trekking to real mountaineering. The trekking peaks Pakistan climbers reach at this height include Passu Cathedral (6,106m), Minglik Sar (6,050m), Koh-e-Brobar (6,008m) and Shimshal Whitehorn (6,400m), a cluster of accessible objectives spread across the Hunza, Shimshal and Batura regions of the Karakoram. Compared with the country's 7000m and 8000m giants, these summits carry far less bureaucracy and far shorter approaches, which makes them ideal for a first expedition Pakistan has to offer.
Several 6000m peaks Pakistan mountaineers rate as introductory or trekking peaks are within reach of fit trekkers who have basic snow and ice skills. Minglik Sar, for example, is a mostly non-technical snow climb often combined with the Shimshal Pass trek, while Passu Cathedral and Shimshal Whitehorn are more technical and better suited to climbers with some prior alpine experience. Whichever you choose, a summit at this altitude gives you genuine expedition rhythm, acclimatisation rotations, glacier travel and base camp life, without the cost, permits and commitment of a higher peak.
Our local teams handle the permits, porters, cooks and logistics for every 6000m expedition, and the standard climbing window runs from June to September when Karakoram weather is most settled. For many climbers a Pakistani six-thousander becomes the stepping stone to a later 7000m or 8000m attempt in the same ranges.
