Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best treks in Pakistan?

The best treks in Pakistan run through the Karakoram and Himalaya. K2 Base Camp on the Baltoro Glacier is the classic long expedition; Fairy Meadows below Nanga Parbat is the easiest and most famous walk; Snow Lake and Hispar La cross one of the largest glacial basins on the planet; Rush Lake reaches Pakistan's highest alpine lake at 4,694m; and Rakaposhi Base Camp is a short trek to the foot of a 7,788m giant. Together they cover every level, from gentle meadow walks to full glacier expeditions.

How difficult is trekking in Pakistan?

Difficulty ranges from easy to full expedition grade. Easy routes such as Fairy Meadows and Patundas Meadows stay below 3,500m on well-marked paths and suit beginners with basic fitness. Moderate and challenging treks like Rakaposhi Base Camp and Rush Lake climb to 4,000 to 4,700m and need some hiking experience. Strenuous and extreme journeys such as K2 Base Camp, Snow Lake and the Gondogoro La cross glaciers and high passes above 5,000m and demand excellent fitness, with mountaineering skills in places.

When is the best trekking season in Pakistan?

The main trekking season runs from June to September, when the high valleys and glaciers of the Karakoram are clear of snow and the passes are open. July and August are the most reliable months for high routes such as K2 Base Camp and the Gondogoro La. Lower treks like Fairy Meadows and Rakaposhi Base Camp can also be walked in late spring and early autumn, when the crowds are thinner.

Are treks guided, and are permits and porters arranged?

Yes. All our trekking holidays are fully guided by experienced local mountain guides, and we arrange permits, checkpoints, porters, cooks and camping equipment as part of the package. Some routes near the frontier or on restricted glaciers require a No Objection Certificate and a licensed guide, which we organise for you before departure so you can simply walk.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

Not for the easier walks. Meadow and short base-camp treks such as Fairy Meadows and Patundas suit first-time trekkers with reasonable fitness. Higher and longer routes do need previous multi-day trekking, and glacier expeditions like K2 Base Camp and Snow Lake reward strong hill fitness and time spent at altitude. Tell us about your hiking background and we will match you to the right trek.
