About This Tour
This is the wildlife product in our Deosai range, timed and routed around animals rather than scenery. The plateau, averaging 4,114 metres, is the last viable refuge of the Himalayan brown bear in Pakistan, and the open, treeless ground means that when a bear is out, you can watch it from a long way off without disturbing it. We work the edges of the day, dawn and dusk, when the animals move and the light is good, and we spend more time camped on the plateau than our touring trip allows.
The bears are the headline, and their story is worth knowing before you come. The population on Deosai had fallen to roughly 19 animals by 1993, the year the national park was created. Protection has brought it back to about 80 today, which is a genuine recovery but still leaves the subspecies endangered, with every animal counting. That history sets the tone for how we watch: from a distance, briefly, on the bear's terms. We will say plainly that bear sightings are never guaranteed; some trips connect, some do not, and patience is the price of admission.
Marmots are the safari's reliable pleasure. The golden marmot, Marmota caudata, lives in social colonies across the plateau, and their sharp alarm whistles carry over the flat as they stand sentinel at their burrows. Alongside them you may find Himalayan ibex on the slopes, red fox, the Tibetan wolf and the golden eagle overhead. Sheosar Lake, at 4,142 metres, anchors many of our drives: glacier-fed, still in the early morning, and a draw for birdlife in summer.
The safari runs 5 to 7 days from Skardu, priced from $1,100, with a wildlife guide throughout and game drives by 4x4 across the rough plateau tracks. We build the days around early starts and late finishes, the times that give you the best chance. If your interest is the landscape rather than the animals, or you would rather camp for the night sky, our two sibling Deosai trips will suit you better, and we cross-link them below.
How We Watch Wildlife on Deosai
A brown bear that learns to associate people with food, or that is crowded and stressed by vehicles, is a bear in trouble. So we keep firm rules. We watch from a distance, we keep engines and voices low, we never bait or chase, and we never position the vehicle to cut off an animal's line of movement. If a bear shows signs of being disturbed, we back off. These are not formalities; on an endangered population of about 80 animals, every interaction matters.
We also manage expectations honestly. The plateau covers around 3,000 square kilometres and the bears range widely, so a sighting takes patience, the right hours and a degree of luck. Our guides know which sectors the bears have been favouring and where the marmot colonies sit, and they will tell you straight when conditions make a bear unlikely rather than have you chase one across the flat.

Best Time for the Deosai Safari
The plateau is reachable only from roughly mid-June to mid-September; the rest of the year the roads are snowbound and shut. Within that window, July and August are the strongest for wildlife: the meadows are in flower, the marmots are active, and the bears come down onto the open grass to graze, which is exactly when they are easiest to spot from a distance.
We schedule drives for first light and the last hour before dark, because that is when the animals are on the move. The middle of the day is quieter for wildlife, so we use it for the lake, rest and the longer transits. If a bear is your single goal, come in the peak weeks and come with patience.
Getting There and Where You Stay
The safari is based out of Skardu. Most guests fly in from Islamabad, about an hour when the weather cooperates, or drive up the Karakoram Highway. From Skardu we enter the plateau via the Sadpara side, around 44 kilometres and roughly an hour and a half, with some departures using the smoother Astore (Chilim) side depending on conditions and where the animals are.
Because this trip prioritises dawn and dusk on the plateau, it includes more time camped high than our touring tour, with comfortable nights in Skardu either side. A wildlife guide and, where required, a park ranger accompany the drives, both for sightings and for the park's own rules on access.
Safari, Touring or Camping?
This trip is for travellers who come for the animals. If you want the plateau and Sheosar Lake as a landscape, with hotel nights in Skardu, our Deosai National Park tour is the simpler introduction. If the draw is sleeping high under a dark sky, our Deosai camping tour bases you at Bara Pani for the stars and the dawn. All three cross the same plateau; the safari is the one shaped around brown bears and marmots.
Why Book With Us
We have guided wildlife trips in Gilgit-Baltistan since 2015, and our safari runs with a dedicated wildlife guide and ranger accompaniment, not a general driver. We work the right hours, hold firm to ethical viewing distances on an endangered bear population, and we tell you the truth about your odds rather than overselling a sighting. Because the season is short and the weather moves the roads, we plan flexibly, switching entry sides and sectors to follow where the animals actually are.
