Trekking Peaks

Base camp treks and high passes beneath Pakistan's most iconic summits

Zuletzt aktualisiert: · Reviewed by Javeed Iqbal, Founder

High-pass treks in Pakistan cross glaciated alpine passes that link one great valley system to the next, rewarding fit trekkers with summit-scale panoramas without the full apparatus of a mountaineering expedition. The classic high pass trek in Pakistan is the Gondogoro La (5,585m), a glacier pass deep in the Karakoram that opens onto a horizon of eight-thousand-metre peaks. Alongside base camp routes such as Rakaposhi and pass crossings like Shimshal, these treks combine a multi-day approach through some of the country's most spectacular scenery with a demanding crossing on snow and ice.

The Gondogoro La trek is usually combined with the K2 Base Camp and Concordia trek, crossing the glacier pass on the return leg so that trekkers walk out beneath K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums. A crossing at this altitude requires fixed ropes, crampons and an ice axe, an early alpine start, and an experienced guiding team to fix the ropes and manage the route. The reward is one of the finest high-mountain viewpoints on Earth, taking in four of the world's fourteen eight-thousanders in a single sweep.

Understanding Pakistan's trekking peaks by altitude and terrain

Accessible Peaks (Under 5,000m)

Ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers. Routes like Rakaposhi Base Camp offer spectacular views with moderate fitness requirements and well-established trails through alpine meadows.

High Passes (4,500-5,500m)

Pass crossings like Shimshal require strong fitness and acclimatization. These treks traverse remote yak pastures, glacial moraines, and high-altitude plateaus far from civilization.

Glacier Treks

Batura and other glacier treks follow immense rivers of ice flanked by 7,000m walls. These routes demand experience with unstable terrain and changing conditions across ancient ice fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

What high-pass treks are available in Pakistan?

The standout high-pass trek in Pakistan is the Gondogoro La (5,585m), a glaciated pass in the Karakoram usually crossed as part of the K2 Base Camp and Concordia route. Other high crossings include the Shimshal Pass and the Hispar La on the Snow Lake traverse. These sit alongside non-glaciated base camp treks such as Rakaposhi and Nanga Parbat for trekkers who want the scenery without a technical pass.

How hard is crossing Gondogoro La?

The Gondogoro La is a strenuous, high-altitude glacier pass rather than a technical climb, but it remains a serious undertaking. The ascent begins in the small hours on snow and ice, using fixed ropes, crampons and an ice axe over steep sections, and the day is long. Good fitness, prior trekking experience and full acclimatisation from the days already spent trekking to Concordia are all needed.

When is the season for high-pass treks?

The season runs from July to August, when the snow on the pass has consolidated and the weather is most settled. The Gondogoro La in particular is only opened and roped by the local committee for a short mid-summer window, and it can stay closed in a heavy snow year. We confirm current conditions before finalising any itinerary.

What skills and permits are needed?

Trekkers need to be comfortable walking on glaciers with crampons and moving on fixed ropes, though no rock or ice climbing experience is required, as the guiding team fixes the ropes and leads the crossing. The route lies in a restricted border zone, so a trekking permit and a licensed guide are mandatory, and both are arranged as part of the trip.

Can it be combined with the K2 Base Camp / Concordia trek?

Yes. The most popular way to cross the Gondogoro La is as the finale of the K2 Base Camp and Concordia trek. Trekkers walk up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia and K2 Base Camp, then exit south over the pass into the Hushe valley instead of retracing the Baltoro. This makes a spectacular one-way traverse beneath the greatest concentration of high peaks on Earth.
